Sodanie Oum Our Outcasts: Mountain Prompt
It was New Year's Eve, Jackie and her girlfriend Chris wanted to see the midnight fireworks from the top of the hill that they lived near. But, Chris calls it a mountain because she thinks it adds more flare and excitement to their lives.

They are walking up the trail to the top of the "mountain". Jackie has just finished her 5th cup of coffee and throws it on the ground. "Ah yes. By midnight it'll be the 5 year anniversary of the day I got disowned by my family." Jackie says absent mindedly, Chris laughs.

Chris and Jackie both vividly remember the party on the night of New Years Eve when Jackie introduced Chris to her family as her girlfriend. There were a lot of tears, crying, and screaming, mostly from Jackies mother. As Jackie quotes from her mother "don't come back, unless you learn how to behave like a 'normal' young woman, DISGRACEFUL!". And she never actually did come back.

Jackie holds Chris's hand and they walk in unison, "whatever I'm happy with you and that's all that matters, now come on its almost midnight".

The night Jackie got kicked out of the house, Chris offered to let her live with her in her apartment near the mountain. "I didn't know there were any mountains around here" Jackie sniffed though tears. "It's more of a hill but I call it a mountain". Chris said. Jackie shakes her head "you are so pretentious". Chris smiles "but you love it".

Jackie moved in with Chris that night and they've been together ever since, Chris got Jackie a job as a part time waitress, while Chris stuck with her job as a bartender. They made enough money to stay financially stable, life was stable, it's was

Jacob Ackerman, author of “The Hill”, uses dialogue and allegory to express the stereotypes of gender roles amongst society and emphasize that everyone fights a battle that one may not know about. “‘Is he crying again?’”, Roberts is ridiculed by John because he is spotted crying on top of the hill before school starts. This quote points out typical stereotypes of gender roles which consist of such sayings as men shouldn’t cry, feelings are for girls, men should be strong, and so forth. This contributes to the overall allegory, which is demonstrated through the dialogue, that our society sees crying as a weakness, especially from men. This part of the story triggers readers, causing those who have opposing views to be angered by the obnoxious tone of the character John and how he treats Roberts.…

Grande, on the other hand, focuses on an impoverished rural family suffering under the economic conditions in Mexico at around the same time, and of the wave of immigration into the Unites States that followed the economic crisis of 1982. Overall, the two stories…
