The Book of Negroes – An Inspired Playlist About the Life of Aminata Diallo
1) Africa – Toto
‘It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do’
Aminata started her journey in Africa, where she was born and grew to the age of eleven. This song represents her continent of origin and her homeland.

As a young girl, Aminata fought bravely against the slave traders as they captured her. Though she may have been weak, she fought as though she could take them all

Though she couldn’t stop to mourn those lost while on the ship, she still thought of them throughout her journey to freedom. Also, all the others lost during her journey through the colonies were not forgotten by her. She wrote in the Book of Negroes and noted them all; she saw them all as people. Those lost on sunken ships would be remembered thanks to her.
4) Home – American Authors
‘I'm just trying to find a way to make it back home
I'm just trying to get home’
As soon as she was taken, Aminata wished for nothing more than to go back home. No matter what, she promised herself that she would return home. Though she became sick just before she was to be auctioned off, she still was purchased and taken to a plantation. On which she was nursed back to health and was give hope of returning home.

Once she arrived on the plantation, Aminata refused to be weak in front of Robinson Appleby, the plantation owner. She stood proudly under his gaze and worked hard.
