It puts these as opposites when I do not think that they are. I believe these ideas go hand in hand. I know kids that grew up in fantastic homes that have turned out to do bad things, and I know kids that had very little growing up as a far support and have still done quite well as a person. I will say that nurture generally will have an advantage to nature when it comes to determining the success of an individual. People that are born in poverty are generally going to stay in the lower to middle class and someone who is born into a rich family will generally stay wealthy throughout their life. There are certainly many exceptions to this and this is a generalization and not a rule, but how you are raised and how you are brought up generally has the biggest impact on you. No matter how fast your metabolism, if you eat fast food everyday of your life, you are most likely going to be unhealthy. Clients are treated as free beings and have the ability and the responsibility to make their own choices. The therapeutic relationship should be moving to ultimately enable the client to be moving towards these choices. This also means that our past does not lock us in. Our past certainly impacts much of who we are, but our present is determined by what is in our hearts and minds. The past may influence the present, but it does not control it. We should be looking towards our future but it should not be something that is constantly being longed for. Many times, people that constantly look at the future look at it as a sort of utopia, and they get so caught up that they forget about the present. What we do each and every moment determines the future and is influenced by the past, but the person you ultimately become is determined by what you do in the present. I do believe that we can control our own will. This does fit into the existential theory to a degree. Since humans have free will, the present is a critical aspect of how a person has perspective while holding the past and future in the equation. Although I do not think life is meaningless nor is life just something that must be went through, but I do agree that people can influence their lives, and they can do it as they
