Ephesus was founded as an Attic-Ionian colony in the tenth century and has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. Ephesus was a major port and because it was so close to water the location was moved several times due to silting of the harbor. Overall the city of Ephesus was very successful; the trading industry was very successful and traded many things like oil, animals, slaves, stone, pottery, and metals. Not only were they involved in trade Ephesus was also the center of education. Many great philosophers lived in Ephesus including Heraclitus. Since Ephesus was a very educated and free thinking city many of its citizens embraced new religions and cultures. The Ephesians worshipped multiple gods that either originated in Ephesus or were brought in by sailors coming to trade. As for the spreading of the gospel, since the Ephesians were very social people if one person were to hear the gospel it is highly probable that he would share his newfound knowledge with his peers and so on.
