Teachers Edition: The helpfulness of the teacher edition is tremendous. Each section has an aid of informative description of the topic and activities which include full lesson plans. The materials needed and steps are all available including alternatives to consider. The guided activities include the page numbers towards the textbook and the associated BLM, the guided activities even shows you what phase it is according to the triple A model (activate, acquire, apply). After the activities it gives the BLM’s which associate with the activities that the guide suggests. It does a great job of corresponding to the student textbook as each BLM and the activity let you know where the topic is in the student’s textbook and

The guide has an array of different activities that could activate students quite well. However, it is in the assessment portion that seems to be the weakest. The guide does not include assessment tools; it only offers acquiring pages through the BLM’s and the icons. The guide does come with answer keys for the BLM’s which could possibly be used as an assessment strategy. Despite this the icons and BLM could easily inspire some assessment strategies such as reflections and projects. Since the grade 7 curriculum covers ways of life around the world the textbook covers many social justice issues and could be great for creating inquiry based teaching. There are many question the guide helps pose such as: “why is Canada a good place to live, it has crime and homelessness to name just a few. As for the implementation that is suggested by the curriculum that is up to the students and teachers themselves. Teachers would benefit from using the textbook but may also want to use more additional resources. The text does attempt to deal with some issues in depth encouraging debates, but it accomplishes it in a way that is quite extensive covering a lot of

In "A Teachable Good Book: Of Mice and Men" by Thomas Scarseth, the professor argues that "Of Mice and Men" is a tragedy, in which it is simple, yet complicated as it provides wonderful examples of realism and problems in the world, despite being a short read. Scarseth provides many claims and examples supporting the thesis of his paper, which will be highlighted in this essay. The claims are: every story doesn't have to have a happy ending, objectionable elements are necessary as they make stories more realistic, and not everything someone wishes for comes true. Scarseth's first point states that every story doesn't have to have a happy ending. Scarseth made this claim by stating in his paper, "...literature is not always only mere sugar candy; it can sometimes be a strong medicine: sour perhaps- at least to the untrained taste- but necessary for continued health.…

There is no question that the American education system is flawed and is not the most effective to teach students a broad range of academic subjects. Students are graded on the ability to reproduce knowledge onto a piece of paper after days, weeks, or months of studying a topic. The lack of this ability results in failure to earn a passing grade in the subject matter. If the student can reproduce the desired knowledge at a highly proficient rate, they receive a rating that distinguishes them from other students. In “A Young Person’s Guide to the Grading System,” an article written by Jerry Farber, a professor of English at the University of California at San Diego, the grading system is put at fault for the flawed educational system.…

He has a very close to accurate analysis of the current education system and is definitely right when he says that it is similar to that of manufacturing products in a factory. However, the reader must also be cognizant of the fact that no other system that this is practical and can sustain itself for long. The methods employed are right- the actual problem lies with the execution and the content of syllabus. For instance, he points out that the segregation on the criterion of age is not right.
