This family’s environment has been challenging. The father of this family has become overwhelmed with the challenges of not being able to support his family. The family’s emotional health is being jeopardized, because of the father not being employed. He has started to drink, and this is becoming an issue for the entire family. I believe the father and family could benefit from some sort of counseling and support system. From my perspective, the family’s health and safety is at stake, because the family is experiencing dramatic changes. We as social workers have to meet our client population where they are. We have to keep in mind that this family has a different set of values, norms, and a belief system, which is different from ours, and we have to be culturally sensitive, when utilizing interventions to help this Latino

The first critical factor that has, for many years, prevented Latino families from seeking mental health services is the lack of health insurance. There are a lot of different economic circumstances that leads to a lack of medical insurance. The latest statistics from the U.S. Census show Latinos are the largest uninsured group in the country, with over 30 percent of the population without health coverage.(http://latino.foxnews.com/latino/health/2013/01/24/race-still-factor-in-mental-health-treatment-in-california/). As the child of an immigrant family, the immigration policies are of great importance to my family along with many other families. The immigration policies affect many legal and illegal immigrant families and their U.S. born children. The ever-changing laws pertaining to immigrants and how to handle them splits families apart and deports citizens acting fully within the law who have done nothing to deserve their unjust treatment. The laws regarding the deportation of immigrants are never fully clear and are constantly changing thus, leaving many immigrants lost and confused as to their situations not knowing if they are going to be removed from the country at any moment. An immigrant may apply for a residency renewal and find themselves in…

Transnationalism and identity are key factors in defining a person's beliefs and practices. However, the children of immigrants have a hard time maintaining their culture because once they step in America, they are required to adapt to the American Culture if they want to succeed in U.S. This idea is cruel as well as discriminating the culture of the immigrants. I have read two articles that talks about this type of situations that immigrants go through when they arrive in U.S. The two articles that I’m referring to are called, “ Expression of Maya Identity and Culture in Los Angeles,” by Giovanni Batz and “ Alla en Guatemala,” by Lucila D. Ek.…

Although people assume otherwise, I am Latina, and I'm proud to be a part of that community. I obtain my Latin blood from my father, who moved to the United States from Uruguay as a child. My parents divorced each other when I was young; however, when I was with him for either the weekend or the month of July, I embraced all the wonders of my Latin family. Latino culture entails prodigious amounts of cooking, and we always cooked Uruguayan food; it was almost taboo to eat out. From flan to the glorious empanadas, my family always ate homemade meals.…

Discussion Culturally congruent interventions that are supported by evidence to aid Hispanics families in accessing health care include state and national policies. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is a national policy created to give Americans the opportunity to access affordable health care with limited discrimination (Shaw et al., 2014). It gives the Hispanic population a better chance in receiving health insurance coverage. A second policy, Building Strong Readers in Minnesota, is a state policy targeted at children in grades pre-kindergarten through 3rd grade. It makes sure that once children get to 3rd grade that they can read at the appropriate reading standard for the state (Lieberman, 2015).…

Taking into consideration that Latinos are the largest ethnic/racial minority population in the United States, it is imperative that health care professionals be knowledgeable and capable of understanding Latino’s cultural belief and practices regarding health in order to provide optimal care. The incorporation of Latino cultural values and beliefs into the plan of care would positively influence patients’ outcomes and would enhance compliance with treatment in patients from this culture. The Latino population in the United States is divided into…

A few degrading words that people use when referring to Mexicans are; Wetback, Spic, and Beaner, whether American or not. They also have many stereotypes against them such as lazy, machismos, drunks and many more. One of the main reasons they are discriminated against is because of their illegal immigration into the United States. Mexicans were left no choice but to cross illegally to seek a better life, because of the cost and many obstacles it made it difficult to become a citizen. Often they were forced to work physically demanding jobs for less pay due to non-citizens or lack of options, or because they wanted badly to be part of the U.S and saw themselves to be best off here even if wages were cheaper than back at home.…

Hello Laquanda after reviewing our video I leaned what cultural competence is and how it affects others around us. As stated cultural competence is the ability to effectively build such bridges across cultures and to use culturally appropriate helping strategies in all phases of the planned change process. During the beginning of your video, I was under the impression that you were defining cultural sensitivity, which entails social workers to be respectful of differences among people and recognize our own biases, prejudices, or lack of knowledge regarding diverse groups. On another note, I thought your example of finding ways to help the students you work with by talking to counsels and school social workers.…
