Book Banned In Schools

Censorship is when books, movies, news, etc. are suppressed or prohibited because they are seen as inappropriate or a public threat. Books, movies, news, etc. are censored because of religious and political objection. Many books are censored in America, but the first book to ever be censored goes by the title New English Canaan. New English Canaan was originally published in 1637 by Thomas Morton. This book had been banned because they had sympathy towards the native americans, they admired their nature and they were very disrespectful to the self-sanctified people. The banning of this book involved Morton to be cleansed by the puritans. Some famous examples of book banning in schools across the United States include Best Short Stories of Negro Writers, Go Ask Alice, Annie on My Mind, and God Bless You Mr. Rosewater. The current state of affairs in regards to banned books in the united states are for the most part banned in schools or for young children because they are deemed inappropriate for certain age groups. Examples of books being banned because they are inappropriate for children are Harriet the Spy, Sylvester and the Magic Pebble, and The Lorax. Harriet the Spy was banned because it portrayed an eleven year old that spied on people and wrote down her opinions on what they did and what kind of people they were which can be a bad influence on young children. Sylvester and the Magic Pebble was banned because one of the characters finds a pebble and wishes for the impossible, the book also portrays the police as pigs which can brainwash children making them believe police are bad people.
