Boo Radley Isolation

Improved Essays
Firstly, I predict that the kids will not meet Boo Radley. I have come to this conclusion based on evidence supporting the idea that Boo Radley is locked up. One reason is because I believe Boo Radley is socially isolated from Maycomb. Jem and Scout have never actually seen Boo; therefore we can infer that Boo does not come out of his house often, if at all. The house itself has all the shutters and doors closed, even on Sundays and Boo never attends church, like everyone else. This could mean that Boo does not socialize with the rest of Maycomb and he might not even know how to act around other people, much less around Jem and Scout, which is why he never leaves his house. Another reason for this is because the Radleys themselves are closed off and are keeping Boo away. In court Mr. …show more content…
This could potentially mean that the Radleys are keeping Boo inside the house, so that he does not attempt any more illegal activities, socially isolating him. My last reason for Boo being locked up is that he stabbed Mr. Radley with scissors. After that, there was talk of sending Boo off to an asylum, until Mr. Radley convinced them of sending him home, after locking him in the courthouse basement. This shows signs of mental instability in Boo, and almost sending Boo to an asylum shows that people in Maycomb also believe that he is ill. Nathan Radley ended up watching him, after Mr. Radley’s death and this could mean that Boo needs someone to watch over him, due to his ill state. Jem and Scout also might not meet Boo, because they are petrified of him. In the story the mere mention of Boo could keep the kids disciplined, because they believed in the rumors. Many kids even refused to pick the Radleys’ pecans, or fetch baseballs that fell into the Radleys’ yard. Jem and Scout went as far as to believe that Boo dined on cats and squirrels, had yellow teeth and supported a jagged facial scar, implying that they believe he is a

Jem and Scout had never seen him, which is close to not seeing a person for ten or more years. How can a person not be seen for such along time? This is why many people assume Boo is locked up. The townspeople of Maycomb cannot comprehend how someone could not go outside and be social. Another reason why the town members will not see Boo is when he got in trouble in the town,…

The children struggle to approach the house, so it will be almost impossible for them to to approach Boo Radley himself. When someone is obligated to walk by the house, they will walk swifter than usual, and they will walk on the opposite side of the street. It is clear that the people of Macomb are intimidated by Boo because of how reluctant they are to approach the house. Also, many people assume that Boo commits all the small crimes in Macomb. Boo was once a culprit for mutilating pets and chickens, but when his name was cleared people were still suspicious.…

Throughout the book he was mysterious but there were hints were thrown at us about who he truly was. Jem said, “I think I’m beginning to understand why Boo Radley’s stayed shut up in the house all this time… it’s because he wants to stay inside” (Lee 231 ch. 23). This quote makes me think that Boo Radley stays inside to stay away from all the harm that there is outside. A lot of the town would take advantage of Boo Radley, and they saw him as a bad guy. Not many people attempted to take a walk in his shoes, but if they would have, then they could have come to the same realization the kids did and seen that he was a good and innocent guy.…

In my opinion, I think that Scout, Jem, and Dill will not meet Boo Radley mainly for two reasons. First of all, Boo has not been seen by anyone for a substantial amount of time. It appears that he has been pretty much locked up inside of his house. This happened because he was a part of gang that had not done many major crimes as far as typical gangs go, but he had been involved in a couple of minor instances. In a small town like Maycomb, these misdemeanors are frowned upon heavily for the lack of more major crimes.…

Boo Arthur Radley is a caring child emotionally damaged by his father. Throughout To Kill A Mockingbird, Boo is one of the novel’s “mockingbirds”. The quintessential “mockingbird” is a courteous person, emotionally and physically damaged due to the novel’s antagonists. The antagonists are under the false misconception that Boo “went out at night...and peeped in windows.” Countless individuals “still [look] at the Radley place...unwilling to discard their...suspicions” (Lee 9).…

In her greatest novel of all time, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee is able to incorporate symbolism when she compares many characters to a simple, once-mentioned mockingbird. These characters include, but are certainly not limited to, Tom Robinson, Mr. Arthur Radley (Boo), and Jeremy Finch (Jem). While Tom and Boo were both Mockingbirds throughout the entire novel, Jem was special due to the fact that he developed into a mature young man from an innocent young boy. Tom Robinson was an amiable, young black man who was always willing to lend a helping hand.…

Boo, who was viewed by Scout like a ghost who creeps on people at night, saves Scout and Jem from Bob Ewell who give him nothing in return. Scout said " I was beginning to learn his body language. His hand tightened on mine and he indicated that he wanted to leave" (372) This quote reveals to us that Scout is starting to understand how Boo is and why he is so shy since she has experienced how he really is instead of a biased perception of him (before this incident, she wouldn’t even let him put a blanket onto her). She is now learning not to "judge a book by its cover." After Scout walks Boo Radley home she said "One time he said you never know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them.…

Boo Radley was described as a mean scary man that was locked in his house Jem describes him as "Boo was about six-and-a-half feet tall, judging from his tracks; he dined on raw squirrels and any cats he could catch, that’s why his hands were bloodstained— if you ate an animal raw, you could never wash the blood off. There was a long jagged scar that ran across his face; what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most of the time” (16). Then Boo left gifts for Jem and Scout and that was his only way of contact with the outside world. Eventually through the book Bob Ewell attacks Jem and Scout attempting to hurt them and Boo Radley kills Bob Ewell. Atticus thought Jem killed Bob Ewell…
