Though they were not alive to see the impact that they had caused, the movies that were inspired by their legacies changed Hollywood’s old rule of censorship. In 1967, Bonnie and Clyde was released, and it caused extreme controversy among critics. Hay’s Code decided what was acceptable to put into movies, and the bloody deaths of Bonnie and Clyde were not found to be appropriate for Hollywood. The depiction of their deaths were so gruesome and real that they struck the nerve of many critics. The deaths were very detailed and people had never seen such acts of violence depicted on the big screen. Gray states that, “It was an atrocious mix of comedy and violence that captured the restless, maverick mood of the world”, and the people of the United States were in a state of shock and amazement at the intense depiction of Bonnie and Clyde’s deaths.
