It is easier to start on a background that is not white, darker colors such as black, brown, and ultramarine blue are washed onto the paper or canvas. This gives a feel of having already started. Recently, paintings have revolved around the combination of soft pastel and oil paint, creating a harmonious image in two fluent mediums. Once this is completed, oil pastels are used to section off the objects and then begins the painting. The farther objects are more often done in oil paint and the focus of the painting is done with soft pastels. The pastels tend to work best on heavier paper, which allows a more impressionist display, rather than working on exact details of the item itself. The focus on color relates closely to the previously mentioned artist Bonnard, as well as artists such as Vincent Van Gogh. The singularity of specific, mundane objects for this type of work is from influence of Philip Guston, who turned such unremarkable items into large pieces of art.
When creating watercolor pieces, the focus on organic matter is important, as the ink creates a more solidified image of the vines and leaves in which can be overlooked when viewing the subject in real life.
