This pathology associated with osteoporosis or osteopenia, and rarely with osteomalacia may conduct to morbidity (bone pain, skeletal deformities, immobility and fragility fractures).1 All the alterations of bone metabolism that appear in the evolution of CLD are defined as hepatic osteodystrophy (HO).2 HO is a common complication of CLD and it involves impairment of bone mineral density (BMD) so that an assessment should be made in patients with CLD in order to preserve the quality of life and also the long term prognosis.3 There are many factors that

Usually the bone loses density, which measures the amount of calcium and minerals in the bone. (Porth, 2011). This disease occurs most often in the elderly, and is seen more commonly among white women. The cause of the disease remains unknown, but it suggests that there is an imbalance of bone resorption and formation (Porth, 2011). The resorption exceeds the formation.…

    • Calcitriol: Calcitriol plays a significant role in calcium metabolism and maintenance of bone health. calcitriol controls the production of 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol to increases calcium absorption from the intestine, bone resorption, and that release calcium from bone to blood. calcitriol induces renal transport mechanisms that are activated by Parathyroid hormone that increase tubular reabsorption of calcium from the glomerular filtrate, thus preventing calcium loss in urine (de Brito Galvao, et al, 2013)…

Bone scintigraphy (BS) is one of the most common detection tools that used to find certain abnormalities in bone. It is used in the diagnosis of several conditions relating to bones such as bone cancer, bone metastasis and bone inflammation. It has high sensitivity and wide availability. However, its sensitivity and specificity is not enough for the detection of lytic lesions which are related to osteoblastic reaction. A sensitivity and specificity are increased to be 93% when a single-photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) scan technique is added.…

Reptiles are notorious for having dietary or environmental illnesses one of which being metabolic bone disease which is the removal of calcium form the bones to keep the balance of calcium in the blood within normal range (Bartlett 2003). The reduced calcium levels within the bones can cause weakening of the bone structure and the formation of callus lumps over the body predominantly the tail, legs and spine (Martin 2005). Other symptoms of metabolic bone disease can be stunted growth and a spongey lower jaw (Kaplan 2014) which can be painful for the animal causing loss…

In turn this will lead to organ failure and eventually death (Gardenshi et al, 2007). The activation of SMAD 1,5,8/SMAD 4 complex is what causes the expression of hepcidin. Osteoporosis is a result of a decrease in low bone density and is frequently found in thalassemic patients and rodents (Charoenphandhu et al, 2011). In fact 33% to 20% of thalassemic patients experience osteopenia, a less severe form of osteoporosis, and are at a higher risk for bone fracturing.…
