Introduction
There are four main ways substances bond together. These include metallic bonding, ionic bonding, covalent bonding and covalent network bonding. This assignment will explore the bonding of chemicals and elements in their commonly known state.
Metallic bonding
Metallic bonding describes the intramolecular bonding within metals; the electrostatic attraction between positively charged ions and the negatively charged delocalised valence electrons (see figure 1). Metal atoms are arranged in a tightly knit, regular, lattice structure which is the reason why metals aren’t brittle and their atoms are extremely hard to break apart.
