Case Study: Bond Intelligent Care

As an employee at a small healthcare start-up, I have become intimately familiar with the socio-technical system surrounding the tele-health mobile application that we have created, Bond Intelligent Care (henceforth referred to as Bond).
Software / Hardware
Bond is merely the software component of the socio-technical system, requiring hardware such as iPhones and personal computers to be utilized. Since Bond requires a data connection, it also necessitates routers or data towers to operate.
People
Bond uses this data connection to link two distinct groups of people via video call – patients and physicians. However, the socio-technical system also includes the people who manage and develop Bond, the employees that generate email campaigns and contact patients, and the legal

Impacts
This rests mostly on the individual employee(s) who have access to both databases, but the individual is likely to be motivated by the needs or wants of the organization. The organization must also promote a culture that discourage this questionable behavior to avoid potential lawsuits or legal issues. On the societal level, a breach of trust would be yet another in the many breaches of trust regarding user data and would continue to foster a distrust toward data collection.
Location and Licensure Issues
The patient and physician location are critical in following state medical licensure laws. Programmatically handling cases with geolocation will require ongoing verification of the efficacy of the code to avoid accidental licensure issues. Location spoofing to evade these restrictions is also a concern to consider.
