Love is Caustic: A Look into the Similarities and Differences of Laustic and Bisclavret Throughout Marie de France’s many lais, she focuses on the many facets of human nature, such as who can be trusted, who will act accordingly to their rank and status in the court, who will be honorable and treat others with respect, and most importantly, who is most deserving of the love of another. By the very definition of the lais, being a love ballad of sorts, this is nothing surprising. What is far more shocking about the works of Marie de France is that she holds nothing back when it comes to the repercussions that her characters experience for their actions. The idea that love can nurture and help one grow is noted by Marie, but the opposite being…

Love, although often described as a feeling with a positive connotation, can also bring out the worst in a person. It is such a prominent feeling that even the gods who are able to unleash a wrath to make a kingdom fall are unable to escape its clutches. In Ode four of Antigone by Sophocles, the chorus sings of how love is a dual edged sword and the overwhelming rush of emotion the people feel when they see Antigone bound, about to marry death. Sophocles is able to convey these themes and Antigone’s fascination with death, which is a common theme throughout the play, is the cause of Haemon’s and Creon’s fight. Antigone, along with love, “[has] ignited this, this kindred strife, father and son at war” that is causing tension in the palace…

Those aspects are women get control in the relationship, jealousy leads to betrayal, love becomes an addiction, destructive power, and men try to regain control. The theme of self-destructive love within relationships in Shakespeare's Macbeth and Bronte's Wuthering Heights are presented through sexism, jealousy, and betrayal. Women who have sovereignty are remembered for what they’ve done and how they got their power.…

Entering Hong Kong felt mechanical, as most travel does- this time is so drenched in systematic motions that there’s not a moment to register the change in atmosphere. Leaving the airport, taking the train over the ocean onto the island, seeing rows of apartment buildings as concrete beauties, before they dissolve into the glass towers of the island: these are the moments that jar, that you realise the space you are in. But I realised we were trapped. Situated, from the train to the bus, with no grasp over the city, just the window and the outside world that dwarfed us. What I felt in this moment were the images I had seen in film (I’m not sure how proud of this I should be); I thought of Johnnie To’s Don’t Go Breaking My Heart 2.…

All throughout high school my English teachers would assign us to read a variety of novels and passages with the theme pertaining to distress or love. This made me become more familiar of pieces of literature like Jane Eyre from Charlotte Bronte, The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton and poems like What thing is love from George Peele. Each of their styles of writing were different, but despite their prominent differences I also began to realize their similarities the more that I was exposed to them. I noticed that a common component that these authors had was that they were trying to express what it meant to be in love to them. It was almost like they were making an effort to come up with a definition for love.…

In the poems “Let me not to the marriage of true minds” by William Shakespeare and “Living in sin” by Adrienne Rich had tons of similarities and differences. One of the similarities they had was that each one says love will be there forever and sometimes that love for a person can change. It can change at different times during the relationship from being on to off. One difference they had was that in Shakespeare’s poem he says that love may not always be the best thing. Marriage is about two souls rather than two bodies.…

In literature, love has always been a concept of great debate, although, what exactly is love? Pamela C. Regan, from Los Angeles University, explains that “…A person who experiences sexual desire for another individual, along with other emotional or psychological events, may characterize his or her state as one of ‘being in love…’” (Regan 139).
