When I had first viewed the article, the fallout from a social media bombshell, I automatically made a distinct connection with social interaction associated with social status, as well as social norms and reality in relation to social interaction within a typical society. As defined in the textbook status is pertaining to a social position that a person holds in society. The status a person holds in society helps shape how they are perceived as an individual within society and how they view themselves through the eyes of others. In the article, Essena is struggling with the status she has given herself based on her experience with social media. Essena’s status in society was that of her being on a higher level than others as a result of looking like perfection through her photos and posts on social media for the whole world to view. Throughout her years on social media Essena was perceived to be better than everyone else in many aspects. She was viewed by many different woman as being prettier as well as skinnier than the average person in a society. Within society, status can be considered a very important aspect to an individual. An individual’s true status may not be accurately represented through the use of social media pages. Posting pictures that show only ones good side and represents no flaws suggests that the individual contains no flaws which is simply just not true. Within every individual there is always flaws, it is what makes us human. The status that many individuals hope to achieve is the status of containing no flaws and being near or at a level of perfection. Social norms is defined as an expected form of behaviour that is accepted throughout society as a whole and expected in order to fit in within the societal behaviour. In the beginning, social media became a tool for communication between individuals throughout the world, recently it has become a place for a competition of who can get the most likes, or who can become the most recognized through social media profiles.
