Ecuadorian music generally is not well known in America. So knowing this is what really encouraged me to attend an event were Ecuadorian music was performed for the public. Even though Ecuador is a small country in South America, it homes several cultures. For example, Afro-Ecuadorian is an ethnic group, which is on the North part of Ecuador along the pacific coast. In this ethnic group, there are two types of traditional music. They are marimba music and Bomba music. The performance event that I attended focused on Bomba music. This event was about Chota Madre, which is a cultural movement whose mission is to share and promote their cultural heritage by performing Ecuadorian music through the Bomba genre from El Valle del Chota. El Chota is the motherland of the musical rhythm characterized by the percussion Bomba drum, which is handmade by the descendants of the African slaves that are brought to Ecuador. Bomba is a kind of music that involves a small guitar known as the requinto, the guiro and the male and female voices. Bomba can go from a mid tempo to a very fast rhythm. Which I experienced at the event.
The event was held at the Broadway library, which is located at 40-20 Broadway, long Island City in Queens. I decided to attend this event

“La Negra” was a song that was about a woman who ran away and the man decides to chase her. The man decides to chase her because of the way she dances to the Bomba music. Another song that was sung was “Dancing Bomba” and this was the closing song. During this song they encourage the audience to participate by dancing. “Dancing Bomba” was not similar to the other songs since there was improvisation used. Also, call and response was present in this song. The vocalist would sing a part and then the instrumental players would response by saying what sounded as “hey”, “pa abago” or “ohh.” During this song the singing was more of a narrative unlike the other

A very famous artist in this genre of this music is DJ Erick Rincon, who is part of a popular Mexican pop DJ trio from San Nicolas de los Garza, Mexico named 3BallMTY. He has been making tribal guarachero music since 2009. He said that this genre of music originated in Mexico City from 2000 to 2001. He describes the music as “tribal mixes, pre-hispanic and African sound with Cumbia basslines.” He also said “In the beginning it sounded more indigenous, more Aztec, but once it made it to Monterrey it changed, tribal guarachero was born mixing more Colombian guacharacas and Cumbia” (Rincon, “Mexican Pointy Boots”).…

Guido d’Arezzo was an Italian Benedictine Monk born in France in the century year of 995. Guido was not a composer during this time, instead he was a musical therapist and teacher. Although he was not a composer, Guido made the discovery of a new form of music notation after moving to Italy where he also worked for Bishop Theobald, despite the fact that he was a music therapist and teacher ("GUIDO D'AREZZO"). With his new discovery, this method made it possible for composers to record their music on paper. Beforehand, singers and composers had to remember their own melodies and chants by memory, causing major differences within the music as they passed the music down generations ("GUIDO D'AREZZO").…

When a performer was singing, there was a good chance they were dancing as well. The two interplayed throughout this performance. Dorothy at one point in the show did the “Nae Nae” and “Hit the Quan,” two urban style dances that were created by African Americans. In addition, the acrobatic stunts by Cirque du Soleil added a twist to the show. The dance performed by the poppy flowers was another performance that did not take place in the original…

1945 brought the end of the second world war in which ended the lives of nearly 60 million people. This war had led to changes in the economy, politics, geography and country relations and had also changed people’s sentiments and thoughts. The live music event I attended was a Flamenco music featured at a Pan-latin American restaurant here in Houston. The music was performed by Guillermo Serpas, a Nuevo Flamenco guitarist in Houston whose unique style combines a fusion of Spanish Guitar, Latin Jazz, and World Music. In this restaurant there are two main areas and the environment of each varies drastically. Inside if the restaurant you will find a bar and a very small stage, however this stage was not in use when I attended. And then outside of the restaurant on the patio you will find a much livelier seen where every Sunday the restaurant hosts a Pig roast which is very familiar to me coming from my Cuban culture.…

All the dancers that participated in it all had their own personal stories that they could relate to which made the dance so special. Everyone was truly happy to be performing and telling the story. Another thing that really worked well with the dance was all the different parts throughout the dance along with the formations. Never did I once get bored and drift off into space while that dance was on stage. The choreography was so dynamic and unique that you never knew what to watch because everything that was going on was so beautiful.…

For centuries, song and dance have been a vital part in creating and expressing a community’s sense of identity. Through each, members are able to pass on traditions, make political statements, and express themselves. The tango and salsa styles of music and dance are prime examples of mobilities in Latin American music that help foster a sense of identity among the smaller communities, although each required international attention before earning recognition from its home country. Each style of music is a special hybrid of all kinds of influences, demonstrating a deep history that can also give some insight to the social outlook of the times. Despite the time gap between the emergence of the two styles (tango first appearing in the early 19th century while salsa came into the scene around the 1970s), both styles have contributed a significant impact in establishing a sense of identity among Latin American music.…

The song is cool and chill, and the instrumentation that Leadbelly uses is guitar. I also notice the call and response in this piece of music. For example he sang the line of “My girl, my girl, don’t you lie to me.. where did you sleep last night,” and then he followed by saying “Come on and tell me somebody.” I think Leadbelly should be recognize as an artist or musician in the society.…
