DP 6 Posting! According to Bolman and Deal (2013) effective leaders have the ability to move fluidly between and among the four frames should conditions require to do so. Furthermore, Bolman and Deal (2013) argue effective leaders utilize all four frames to develop strategies and a full range of solutions for organizations. This week’s discussion post focuses on two frames (political and symbolic) with regards to the collaborative initiative to recruit a replacement for the retiring CFO.

Politics play a critical role in every organizations. According to Bolman and Deal (2013) the political frame (metaphor: jungle, arena, or contest) is a necessary ingredient to organizational effectiveness. This frame not only entails authority as dictated by the structural frame. It also emphasizes leadership skills, power and personality traits such as reputation and coercion (Bolman & Deal, 2013). With regard to this situation, the CFO has formally announced her retirement at the end of the year. The human resource department has been tasked to recruit a replacement for the retiring CFO.

Whereas, the Symbolic Frame captures organizational life described by Bolman and Deal (2013) as drama, theatre, or carnival. Leaders within this frame believe their work, and the work of the organization is important and meaningful. These leaders facilitate change using a symbolic approach; vision for the organization, and inspiration for the staff (Bolman & Deal, 2013).
