Boldness In The Hobbit

Heroes are usually thought to be strong, bold, brave and popular. In The Hobbit, we meet Bilbo Baggins, who does not fit the idea of a traditional hero. In fact, Tolkien writes that Bilbo is an , “ unexpected hero.” Tolkien write about Bilbo to be an, “ unexpected hero,” because he’s a Hobbit and they usually just lounge around. But Bilbo actually uses three characters to show that he can go from, “ Hobbit to Hero.” He shows boldness, intelligence and bravery. For instances Bilbo shows his first sign of becoming a hero by his boldness. He uses boldness when fighting against Gollum. It starts with Bilbo finding a magic ring in Gollum’s cave. He uses the ring to fight Gollum and escape from the cave to make his way to find the Dwarves.

In chapter 8, the text states that Bilbo was able to free himself from some sticky spider web and kill the spider that trapped him. After that, Bilbo found the dwarves, scared all the spiders away by throwing stones, and then he freed the dwarves with his sword. Knowing this, we can infer that Bilbo has definitely changed from hobbit to hero because the original Bilbo would not have done something so brave and dangerous to save his friends. Along with the spider killing and friend saving, Bilbo was also able to help the dwarves escape from the wood elves by stealing the keys from the guards and floating them down the river in barrels.…

Bilbo, the main character of the story, is a highly respected hobbit because of his family and the fact that he never been on an adventure (hobbits never leave), until now. He is chosen to become a thief and leaves his very comfortable hobbit hole to join thirteen people on an adventure. In the beginning, the hobbit is constantly getting the group in trouble and they start doubting him. Later on the journey, however, he becomes more “heroic” and starts getting his party and himself out of danger. An example of this would be the time when everyone fell asleep and the dwarves were captured by the spiders in the forest, Bilbo used his ring to become invisible and distract the spiders to free the dwarves.…

Even though traditional heroes and their skills, such as strength, are well known, the seemingly insignificant skills that other heroes possess can be crucial for that hero’s journey. An example is how having the skill for solving riddles ensured that Bilbo’s journey wouldn’t end at right at a critical point, when the door wouldn’t open. Additionally, Bilbo’s planning skills also prevented a war between the Lake-men and dwarves, which would only have resulted in bloodshed for wealth and gold. In short, the skills of Bilbo Baggins might not be as notable as the strength of the traditional hero Heracles, but they were still indispensable for the success of the hero’s…

The majority of people have their own definition of a hero, my definition is, a hero is someone that fights for what they believe in, no matter the consequences. Like Beowulf for example, stood up for the people of Heorot when Grendel started to attack, and he also went after the dragon to protect his people. Another hero to me would be Boo Radley. Both Boo, and Beowulf fought for what they thought was right, and also changed how people thought of them.…
