Boko Haram Research Paper

Boko Haram, a group from Nigeria, invades towns throughout the night, killing thousands of people by shooting or beheading them all. Adam Nossiter, a journalist for the New York Times, points out, “They came in the dead of the night… riding on motorcycles and in pickup trucks, shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’.” (1) Boko Haram captured many young girls and women and imprisoning them until they were old enough to marry, which by then they would be forced into marriage by the group. They had forced 450 girls and young women into 4 small houses when they captured them. In some cases, they would imprison the girls by making them slaves and then be forced into marriage in their womanhood. In other circumstances, Boko Haram have captured men and tied their hands together and bagged their heads, leading them to their deaths, where they would, on camera, shout “Allahu Akbar!” and cut their heads off. 26 year-old Fatima Abdullahi states, “”After two weeks they came back and killed him. They had told him to stay. Then, they just shot him. They didn’t say anything” (21). Another example is when Hauwa Abubakar, 24, lived under Boko Haram’s rule and witnessed a mass murder.
Boko Haram has though of different methods to persuade citizens to fall under their rule. They say “No more killing. Forgive us, and follow our doctrine” (31). They were telling the citizens that they were protecting them and they would kill no more, shortly after murdering thousands of innocent people. They would make people pray three times a day or they would murder them, saying that they were doing a “job of God” by killing people (35). The people they captured were kept in very harsh conditions. If children and men were not killed by not obeying the law the first time, they would ask them to join them. No one wanted to, so with that, they would be killed, because they were opposing the rule of Boko
