Although many of the songs on which Starr was the lead vocal were written for him, he did contribute two compositions to the Beatles canon: “Don’t Pass Me By” and “An Octopuses Garden.” In his first compositions, Starr shows complete understanding and acceptance of his persona. Starr’s first contribution to the Beatles canon, “Don’t Pass Me By,” came six years after the release of the Beatles first single and was worked on, by its composer, for five years (Macdonald 286). The song is a “country-and-western style embellished with bluegrass violin”…

Boethius and Lady Philosophy discuss many issues, but come to the conclusion that God foresees everything and there is no free will. Also, Agee’s description of the song only focuses on the sounds that the singers make; He makes no attempt to describe the lyrics of the song or interpret the song to understand any underlying message. Agee is aware that he cannot understand the song, and thus does not make a futile attempt to do so. Instead, he describes the sounds he encounters in terms of metaphor, portraying the tenor’s voice as a “long, plorative line that hung like fire on heaven, or a whistle’s echo, sinking, sunken, along descents of modality I had not heard before,” and the baritone as “lift[ing] a long black line of comment…murmuring along monotones between major and minor, nor in any determinable key” (27). This method of describing the singing appears to give the…

Tragedy doesn’t always have to lack aspects of gore or blood that make peoples’ stomachs turn. In fact, some tragedies may have a lot of horror to them to what may happen to a person; however, when a horrific tragedy occurs to someone close to a person, then that person may be driven to seek a terrible and bitter revenge in honor of the other person. In the years between the late 1580s and early 1590s William Shakespeare wrote his first tragedy, which can now even be a horror story. The story by itself has several themes that can be discussed, and be compared to a similar story which takes place in book six of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. In this paper, I will have two main points that show the similarities between Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare and Metamorphoses by Ovid.…

This song is transcendentalistic, due to the fact it blurs nature and finding one's own spirituality and true being once again. Stevie Nicks is singing about finding herself and how others can find themselves if they just look in their “reflections” in nature; the snow covered hills. Towards the end of the song, she also mentions changing her ways, eventually becoming bolder since she is getting older and learning new things about herself everyday. She finds these numerous traits among herself, bettering herself as she goes by listening to nature surrounding her and her own thoughts; which she denied earlier, scared to change and become confident in herself and independent. However, at the ending of the song, she regains herself and gives advice…

The Opera of Existence In music, the pitches and the pauses in a composition contribute to the piece as much as, or even more than, the lyrics themselves. In non-lyrical music, each note must be deliberate, played in a certain way to achieve the desired effect. The crescendos cause feelings of power and anticipation, while decrescendos gather the attention of the audience. Each note adds to the tone of the piece, but silence similarly asserts itself in its demand to be felt.…

“Green River” by Creedence Clearwater Revival alludes to the reverence of nature included in Transcendentalism. The song mentions various outdoor activities that the singer enjoys, from skipping rocks to midnight walks, and the lyric “Let me remember things I love,” expresses the passion the author has for these nature-centered activities. This excitement about nature is discussed in Emerson’s “Nature”, in which he says “The lover of nature is he whose inward and outward senses are still truly adjusted to each other; who has retained the spirit of infancy even into the era of manhood,” (Emerson 693). This quote presents the popular Transcendentalist philosophy that adults tend to only see nature but children truly enjoy nature, so everyone…

The film opens with a high overhead shot of a single swimmer, and moves through to a scene in a public pool with the sounds of children encouraging their brother in his underwater swim. Note the choice of music – extra-diegetic music, synthesised, harmonious, new-age kind of music in which gives a peaceful, calm effect – the idea is that water, for our protagonist, has spiritual associations beyond just being fun and freedom. His music becomes a motif that recurs through the film. Mulcahy says in an interview that is was his intention to create two worlds; the pool, with childhood associations of fun, freedom, fellowship, and later, adrenaline and excitement – but overall the spirituality of it. The choice of electronic music promotes that…
