Two of the main reasons for this are. Firstly, pressures from family and friends. Could be in any aspect of life, school, work etc..." The online disinhibition effect is applicable here describe, whereby the true or inner-self is presented online, but not in face-to-face conversation". Secondly being able to fit in society, usually they have not confidence enough. So they change their looks offline to overcome those fears. Bullingham L., and Vasconcelos A.C. Online identities in videogames are called avatars. It´s been discovered that avatar customizatition have an influence on how people present themselves. We live in a society where prejudices are very present , that's why people while creating a profile or an avatar tend to features they are not entirely happy with. Al so we can find cases like "Identity tourism occurs when a user of an online environment such as blogging or SL utilizes the potential for anonymity to adopt a different gender or race" . This could only happened if online identities influence the way we see ourselves also it would influence how others see us. Bullingham L., and Vasconcelos A.C. Blum accomplishes his goal to show the reader the internet is tangible. However I don’t think my new understanding of the internet has changed my relationship with the screen and the world. I disagree with Blum’s idea that we face some sort of challenge because we don’t see the internet as tangible. A digital native can use the internet to “reinvent herself many times over without leaving her room, and she can explore her identity’s simultaneously” (Palfrey and Gasser 20).…

The Positive Effects of Gaming Facing reality can be a much less daunting task when a person has a healthy outlet, such as video games, that allows them to satisfy various unfulfilling aspects of their life. Many people find it extremely difficult to make social connections in the real world, because they are simply uncomfortable around other people.…

Turkle concludes that people in public space want to be alone with their personal networks, but she doesn’t present the idea of how connected some people can be with their real selves on those networks with a larger number of people (506). The same could be said for the notion she presents on how the identity that counts most in the world has become the online or virtual identity. The online identity is a significant part of the lives of many people. Turkle could have acknowledged that she is also a person with an online identity, and missed the opportunity to acknowledge that many people connect with others all over the world in a way that was not possible before this online technology. She describes the “always-on/always-on-you technology” (508) making it more difficult for people to separate themselves from their devices causing them to lose the time to “take their time.”…

For example, in the essay, Turkle talks about a girl that has a abusive alcoholic father. In a game called Sims, she creates the same situation, except in the game she is both physically and emotionally strong (Turkle 437). The shaping of lives happens a lot on sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.…

Erving Goffman is considered as “one of the twentieth century’s most remarkable practitioners of social science” (Smith, 2006:1), and is known worldwide for his works, “The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life”. This publication pioneered his perspective on social interaction and the concept of self, and throughout these works, he aimed to outline the way that he believed social life works and essentially how it is made up. Moreover, these works presented ideas in which had not been previously proposed, or even mentioned, before by other sociologists such as Marx, Weber or Durkheim. Goffman received copious amounts of both criticism and praise for this writing, but it is most certainly one of great interest and has sparked much debate over…

In video games, it is rare to find independent female characters in main roles since they are mostly used in background as sidekicks or romance options. These characters are stereotyped in a way that they are the followers of the male hero while they are also sexualised to attract more attention to the game. In this paper, it will be examined how these characters are represented, how these images affect the players and how gamers react when this representation is tried to change. Female characters in video games are usually in pink, tight clothes or wearing masks or ribbons to make players to know that those are not males. They are mostly used as encouragement for the hero staying as a secondary character, which also affect how people think…

When online, boundaries outline what is accepted and what is not, what one may share and what must be kept to oneself. Authors Liam Bullingham and Ana C. Vasconcelos analyze online identities and interaction practices in 10 different cases of bloggers in the article The Presentation of Self in the Online World’: Goffman and the Study of Online Identities. They introduce the term: masking identity, which refers to non-revealing negative experiences that happen in everyday life. “Fear of negative behavior in interaction [may] be reduced by masking identity, as the act cannot be carried through to the offline person” (Bullingham and Vasconcelos 2013:108).…
