Today women pierce their noses and other areas for reasons such as satisfying an inner interpretation of beauty, self expression, and/or to fit in with current trends. It’s also not uncommon for young girls today to get nose piercings simply because they desire to rebel against their parents. Globalizing this type of body modification transformed it from a symbol that brought young girls honor into something that is considered inappropriate or wild (why do Hindus pierce their nose, patheos.com). When a person is seeking help with extreme modifications such as tongue splitting and whisker implants that require a surgical procedure they visit people referred to as “Body modification artists”. Although the procedures are dangerous they are almost never performed by certified physicians. A large portion of these modifications are conducted secretly out of small areas such as tattoo parlors. A common misconception about extreme body modifications is some if not all of the procedures are performed by trained surgeons.
