My hips are uneven, my ribcage is twisted, and my waist falls differently on each side of my body. When I trace my fingers down my spine, I follow the winding path of three, 50 degree curves. For most of my adolescence, I strapped myself into a back brace for 23 hours a day. I remember the painful purple bruises from its tight, velcro straps, the embarrassment of being held aside at security lines, the misery of wearing five layers in the summer, and the taunts of one of my classmates who punched me and shouted, “Hard back! Hard back!”…

I began working on my flexibility when I was only a year old--I did the splits across the Atlantic Ocean. With one foot in Bulgaria and one in America, I had to learn to hold my stretch for months at a time. Soon after I was carried, swaddled, and sung to on the flight into the United States, I learned to walk and speak English. I have PBS Kids and Looney Tunes mostly to thank for this, though I admit American public education could possibly have had some part in my fluency. By the time I left eighth grade, I realized that these seemingly life-altering difficulties were insignificant. I attribute this realization to November 12, 2012, the day I underwent scoliosis surgery. Scoliosis, the curvature of the spine, is a hereditary disease common in females. Prior to my surgery, I was ordered to wear a back brace for twenty-three hours each day to keep my spinal curve of twenty-five degrees from increasing.…
