Body Image in Society
Body Image is the subjective picture or mental image of one's own body. Adolescent years are a time of rapid and intense emotional and physical changes. There is a rise in value and acceptance from others and with a big attention to external influences and social media culture. It promotes a specific image and standard image of beauty. Social media platforms places tremendous value on physical appearance that is impossible for most. The ones who are targeted the most are people who already have mental health problems, but body image can also cause mental health issues for one who doesn't have any underlying problems yet.

Smyths article provides critical thinking. One in four 14 year old girls are depressed. Statistics show that this generation is 4 times more likely to have emotional problems compared to 10 years ago. In the research we’re given a group of 14 year olds. It is shown that 24 percent of girls scored high on the questionnaire given, rather than the boys who were at 9 percent. The question given is “In the past two weeks, which statements are true, sometimes true, and untrue.” Each true is two points. If one scores higher than a 12 help needs to be seeked.

It is classified that the app negatively affects one's body image and self identity. 1,479 people from 14-24 were given a survey on social media platforms. It is shown that instagram increases anxiety and loneliness, with snapchat coming in second place. It is important to make” check and balances in place to make social media less of the wild west of mental health.”

This ideal can begin to develop from as early as the age of nine years old.
