In David Bodanis essay “What’s in Your Toothpaste,” he begins by explaining the purpose of water in toothpaste. He states that toothpaste manufactures use 30 to 40 percent of water in the most common brands. Then he goes on and on about how chalk is used and acquired for the purpose of cleaning teeth. David Bondanis tends to have a humorous tone through out his essay “What’s in Your Toothpaste.” He uses phrases like “Second to water in quantity is chalk: exactly the same material that school- teachers use to write on blackboards.” I believe he uses this statement to show humor by saying that the chalk that is used for toothpaste is the same quality of chalk used for blackboards.
