Bobby Knight Case Study

Former coach Bobby Knight was fired by the University president Myles Brand after 29 years of service. Knight firing came after numerous complaints about his inappropriate behavior. Knight was a legendary and famous coach at the university and had obtained a stellar basketball reputation. However, it was Knight unacceptable behavioral pattern that led to the violation of the university’s zero-tolerance policy including the verbal abuse of one the university high-ranking female administrator. Knight was also accused of grabbing a male student arm and cursing at him because the student had referred to the coach by his last name. The University chose to honor Knight’s contract that expired in 2002. The university began to search for a new coach immediately after the expiration of his contract.
Why Did the University Fire Bobby Knight Accusations surfaced that he had choked a former player during one of the team’s practices. A full investigation was launched resulting in a decision to fine knight for 30,000 and suspend Knight for at least 3 games and take on a zero-tolerance stance for Knight future conduct or behavior.
