Over the next four years the small group added two members to the group Ralph Tresvant and Ronnie DeVoe. In 1982, New Edition came in 2nd place in the Hollywood Talent Night held at the Boston Strand Theatre. This booking was set up and organized by the music producer Maurice Starr. Starr signed the group to Streetwise Records. New Edition came out with a new album “Candy Girl” which made a big impact on Bobby’s career positively. After a while Bobby felt like the singers weren’t being paid enough and he was also beginning to get jealous of Ralph due to the amount of popularity that he was gaining. Bobby soon left the group and signed with MCA Records, Steven Machat became his manager after signing.

Shortly 3 years later their daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown died. The autopsy showed that Bobbi Kristina Brown died of cardiac arrest which is a sudden, unexpected loss of heart function, breathing, and consciousness. Bobby Brown was later on interviewed and he explained that the same thing that happened to his ex wife Whitney happened to their daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown and breaks down in tears as he talks with the reporter.Bobby then made the statement “I came in the marriage with money and left with nothing” meaning in the process of him and Whitney divorcing he lost mostly everything he worked
