Bob Nardelli Response Paper

Receiving bad news in any fashion is difficult, but the letter that Bob Nardelli sent to his employees would have them fill with dread and worry. There are a few things that Nardelli could have done to lessen the blow in his employee letter. The first change would be to get to the fact rather quickly. According to Cardon (2013) “…make the buffer sentence short, and…get to the bad news quickly” (p. 277). Nardelli provides a nice buffer and he explains that there needs to be a decrease of tweny-five percent of his employees, but he tells his employees that “your management will share all the program details with you in the next few days.” (Lavrinc, 2008). He needs to clearly explain the specific reasons for implementig upcoming changes and explain the immediate impacts on how it will affect the employees. Nardelli does not explain much of anything in his letter. He does not give clear specific reasons for the decrease in employement and leaves everything to the leadership teams to deliver the details. Employees want to know the immediate impact of what and how these changes affect them. Nardelli continues to put things off to explain in the near future. The fourth detail is focuses on solutions and longterm goals. This letter lacks in both those details, it leaves everyone with uncertainty for the future. Nardelli acknowledges the need to know what the future holds, but leaves details about solutions or benefits to the management team to deal with in the near future. The last change would be his closing. Nardelli does not convey a show of empathy and does not have the goodwill closure that he intended.
