Bob Marley was one of the most famous reggae musicians ever to live. Known as the “King of Reggae”, he has sold more than twenty million records worldwide. Bob Marley was born February 6, 1945 to Norval Marley and Cedella Booker in Nine Mile, Jamaica. His birth name was actually Nesta Robert Marley, but his parents quickly changed the name because they realized that it was too feminine. Norval Marley left behind his family, and passed away before Bob could ever meet him. His childhood was spent in rural areas, while living a few years in the ghettos of Jamaica. Initially, he did not excel as a solo singer. He did however later find musical success when he joined talents with Bunny Livingston and Peter McIntosh. This trio started a band named the Wailing Wailers who went on in 1964 to record their first hit called “Simmer Down”. By this time Braithewaite, Kelso, and Smith had joined the band. The Wailers became very popular around Jamaica. They were known for having dreadlocks, and smoking marijuana. They believed that marijuana was a sacred herb, with medical benefits. However, they did not have the money to support themselves and because of this, Kelso, Smith, and Braithewaite left the group. Eventually the other members had drifted apart, and Marley moved to the United States where his mom had been living. After eight months in the United States, Bob Marley moved back to Jamaica. He then became the lead singer of a band and took center stage. This is when his career took off and he began to sing nation wide.
