Bob Kalp contains all of the qualities of a man influential in my life. Bob Kalp participated in almost everything possible. He instructed beginning drivers, taught chemistry, coached basketball, and currently coaches softball. At 72 years old, he still resembles a young man. His white hair and skinny body do not fit the image of a softball coach. However, he coaches one of the most successful softball teams in the country. Kalp just finished coaching his 21st softball season. His third Pennsylvania state championship happened this season. He also contains the quality of honesty. Kalp speaks his mind in any situation, serious or sarcastic. When I first met Coach Kalp, fear filled me. He intimidates most of the new freshman players trying out for the team. However, I gradually learned over the years to not be scared of him and to take what he says as …show more content…
At the beginning of every softball season, he holds a team meeting where he consistently tells us that players and coaches are not friends. As a coach, and we are not to speak to him as we would one of our peers. This shows how he treats his players. He previously coached the men’s high school basketball team. In some situations, he treats us female players similar to the men. His sarcastic statements hurt some player’s feelings. , “I would rather see my grandmother in a bikini than watch you field a ground ball.” This comes off as hurtful, except anyone that knows him well knows his personality. I progressively learned about this acerbic language and to not take everything he says seriously. Coach Kalp acts serious during certain moments; however, he also acts sarcastic. One day, an assistant coache of the softball team said to Coach Kalp, “I do not like being called by my married name.” He answered sarcastically, “News flash, do you think I care?” This validates that no matter what anyone says to Bob Kalp, he consistently replies with sarcastic comments.
