Boating 101: Dog Boating Tips
Smelling the sea and feeling the wind in your hair, these are the sensations that often make people fall in love with boating. Being out on the water is exhilarating and is a feeling that is loved by humans, as well as dogs! Dogs are man’s best friend, there’s no doubt about it. So it’s not uncommon for owners to bring their furry companion along for the ride. Dogs love to go out with their family. However, before you bring your pooch aboard, make sure you are prepared. Knowing what to do before and during a boat ride is essential for your dog’s safety and wellbeing.

• Check the weather and the current conditions. You never want to take your dog out in rough conditions. Even in choppy water your dog could be propelled overboard.
• Some dogs can get sea sick, so keep your trips short at first. By doing it this way, you can expose your dog to the rocking and rolling of a boat in smaller increments, and work up from there. This will also allow you to determine if your dog could handle a long day out at sea.
• Make sure you have a place where your dog can go for bathroom time. If you plan on stopping off at different destinations, make sure you bring a leash so you can take them off the boat so they can do their business on land. However, there are portable dog pottys available in the event your itinerary doesn’t include regular land stops.
• Being out on the water can get very hot, so make sure you bring your dog’s water bowl and bring plenty of water. Bringing more water than what is thought to be needed is best, just in case of unforeseen circumstances.
• Make sure you bring plenty of treats. Positive reinforcement is best, and is a great way to help convince him or her to
