I look out into an intimidating body of water, after a drop of sweat falls off my face from biking to this beautiful destination, known as Lake Michigan. After I scope out the frigid windy lake, I walk down the bluff to begin my journey of learning to sail alone. As I touch the sand for the first time that day, it felt like I was pushing against a hot iron. As my dad and I make our way to the boat, my dad comes across the question, "Today looks like a nice day for you to try sailing alone, do you want too?". So many thoughts begin to run through my head like I have to answer a question for a million dollars. Knowing my dad, who is short and chubby, he contains a ton of knowledge of sailing. Since sailing is not all physical but very mental, that can explain how my dad is good at the sport. I reply, "I think I'm ready." Suddenly I see a burst of joy rapidly hit my dad's face as those words fall out of my mouth. Knowing my dad is this happy to see me sail made me …show more content…
I hear noises of fellow sailors giving me pointers on what to do and the noise passes right through both my ears, like there's a hole threw my head. I slowly walk like a turtle to the boat. The tall boat stood in front of me like the Willis Tower. I begin to rig the boat and try to comprehend every word my dad tells me. Words of sailing knowledge slip out of his mouth like he's reading out of a textbook. While I set the boat up, my mindset is focused on what I'm going to do when I'm out in the water, not on how I'm going to set the boat up. Although mentally I may not be ready to do this, but to my dad I have shown physically that I'm prepared. My dad gives me the "Okay" and I head to the locker and grab the sweaty equipment I must put on before I head out on my quest. I strap on all of this equipment like an astronaut puts on his space suit. After I grab the equipment, I shut the locker and head down to the

No a one of them knowing what they were about to get their self into.…

I remember my uncle taking my cousins and I to Duns River Falls in Jamaica. At the bottom of the falls he took me from the shallow ends to the deep end, a good area where my head remained above the water if I stood on my tippy toes. My uncle laid his arms underneath me and taught me to relax and float. From time to time he would slowly remove his arms, allowing me to float without his support. I would freak out when I realized that his arms where no longer there holding me.…

“Miami isn’t too far; it is ninety-five miles away at the most…” Maya’s cherubic features made it hard to fabricate an excuse for wanting to stay in Cuba. I knew that staying here, staying in poverty, predisposed me to a life of misery and malnourishment. The journey would be perilous, which made me wonder if it was worth it. I longed to voice my dissent and convince her to condone the actions of the corrupt government, however I knew the time to liberate had come. My patience for living life as nothing more than a pitiful pauper, salvaging and pilfering for my next meal was beyond exhausted.…

Boating into in the Wellfleet Cove in Cape Cod, the first thing I noticed was how the towering sand dunes on the peninsula protected the still, glassy waters within it from wind. The cove was a sanctuary from my anxious life I led at home. My anxiety causes me to have to look at the future as an overwhelming heap of events with a variety of possible outcomes. I remind myself everyday to take things one step at a time so as not to get ahead of myself in a moment. But in the cove, I need not worry about the future because time ceases to exist there.…
