Blues Music Personal Statement

Blues music is something that has moved me from a very young age. The authenticity and soul of the blues is something I instantly connected with growing up. Watching the true legends of blues music, like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Clapton, play their guitars with effortless expression is inspiring. They successfully combined the creativity of Jimi Hendrix with the intensity of Albert King, but managed to execute each bend and vibrato with the sophistication of a world class jazz musician. They were masters of their craft and influenced me to become a musician. An immense amount of time and dedication is required to attain their level of musicianship, and they have taught me that playing guitar is as much visual as it is physical. A guitarist must be capable of picturing the fretboard in their mind and its’ relationship to the shapes of scales and modes. Choosing the correct notes from these shapes, while seamlessly playing over a chord progression, is what gives music the power to express emotion without words. …show more content…
I excelled in courses like gross anatomy where the material was presented in a visual manner. I enjoyed studying the relationship between structure and function and distinguishing pathology from normal findings. Identifying abnormalities in radiologic imaging provided a similar sense of fulfillment during my clinical clerkships. I was captivated by the attention to detail required to correctly navigate each radiologic study. I also enjoyed the teamwork and communication between radiologists and other physicians. Technology has greatly facilitated the diagnosis and management of medical conditions, and radiologists are trusted to provide guidance and suggest alternative diagnostic modalities when traditional methods prove inconclusive. Having the opportunity to participate in patient care from such a unique standpoint is

During nursing school, pediatrics and med-surg were my two of my most favorite classes. Not only was I interested in the material that was being taught, I was able to store that information in my long term memory. Being able to understand the process and connect the dots helped me to do well in both of those classes. I used that knowledge during my pediatric rotations at Cook Children’s and was able to determine why the patients experienced certain symptoms and what methods of treatment they need.…

Robert Johnson was almost virtually undiscovered once the man’s twenty seven year lifetime came to a close in 1938. Today, he is regarded as one of the most influential blues musicians to have ever lived (Robert Johnson Wiki). Shrouded in an abundance of myths, such as the prospect that Johnson had sold his soul to the devil in order to obtain his musical expertise, Johnson’s legend prospers in the recordings of inspired musicians such as Muddy Waters, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and a handful more sensational performers sprouting from the American blues era (Robert Johnson Wiki). Robert Johnsons King of the Delta Blues Singers released in 1961, superseded the restrictions of former race music and left an inerasable mark on the history…

What is “blues,” really? It is a genre, yes, but some could argue that it was more of a movement, a feeling. The “sound” of blues varies vastly, changing from person to person and from era to era, as do all genres. Though, in comparison, it could be said that blues might be one of the most multi-faceted genres we’ve had to date. This could have something to do with its incipient nature of self-expression, having deep roots in African-American work songs, and spirituals.…

Since a very young age, I have had an interest in, and enjoyed caring for others when they are sick or injured. It wasn't until two years later, my Junior year, that radiography became the area of the medical field that I knew I wanted to concentrate on. I have been a cheerleader since third grade.…

The blues were created in the Mississippi Delta after the civil war. I was 13 years old when I had my first scientific epiphany. My high school biology class was studying the brain and that day we’d been taught that no new neurons formed during adulthood. I remember reading a copy of MIT's Technology Review magazine that night in my parent's living room. There was a short article about new research on neurogenesis: new neurons formed in some areas of the adult brain. At the time, I was not so much floored by the fact that new neurons formed in adulthood, but that even in the 21st century, there was still new discoveries to be made and that my textbooks still didn’t have it all quite right.…
