On Thursday November 2nd, I attended an event of Blues Week which is called Combating Mental Health Stereotype in Black and African People. I wanted to attend this event because I thought it would be interesting to gain knowledge about different cultures and ethnicities in terms of mental health stereotypes. On this event, I learned that African Americans are 10 to 20 % are more likely to report having serious psychological distress when compared to their peers. African Americans represent 12 % of U.S population and 40 % of the homeless population. This is important due to the fact that people experiencing homelessness are at the greater risk of developing mental illness.…
The American music would not be where it is today if it was not the contribution from the African Slaves who were being taken to the States and the Europeans who migrated from Europe. The American music is the product of mixture of different cultures and backgrounds. However, a lot of people do not know that African American influenced country, which is considered white music. For instance, Bailey was one of the first few black musicians who called themselves black hillbillies. You can almost say that the blues were born in the Delta, and even trace many of the styles seen in the Chicago blues to that seen in the Delta. The narrator struggles with expressing his emotions, his brothers addictions, believing his brother is possible of change and his music career. Sonny’s Blues has an undertones similar to the christianity, with Sonny sacrificing so much to overcome addiction. Although the story invokes Sonny in its title, it is through the narrator’s eyes that Sonny and Harlem are revealed. Compared to most of the men in his community, the narrator has succeeded: he has a wife, two children, and a good job as a teacher. The story Sonny’s blues describes the growth experience of a pair of black brothers, Sonny and his brother, who struggled in the white-led society. Blues and Hip Hop are two styles that have vastly different cultures and are not always mentioned in the same breath. Blues songs are famous for their 12 bar format with sorrowful lyrical content, while hip hop songs have a free flowing form lyrical subject matter can range from street life to political issues.
