SCIENCE As early as 9000 years ago, man’s first trip to the dentist resulted when a minimum of nine individuals survived the procedure of drilling holes into their molars in a Neolithic Indus Valley village in today’s Pakistan. Findings push the dawn of dentistry by 4000 years when a drilled molar was noticed in a Neolithic graveyard found in Denmark, to several years earlier. In fact, recent evidence hints the innovation of dentistry with drilled molars found in the teeth of 300 individuals buried in graves at the Mehrgarh site in western Pakistan, which is believed to be the oldest Stone Age complex in Indus Valley. “This is certainly the first case of drilling a person’s teeth”, said David Frayer, professor of anthropology at University of Kansas.…

The Bermuda Triangle: Pseudoscience? Coined by philosopher, Karl Popper, ‘Pseudoscience’ is a term that is prevelant and used to describe theories or even fields of study that appear scientific but are not authentically so. Much like scientific claims or theories, pseudoscientific ideas also stem from curiosity of the humankind. They tend to use seemingly scientific jargon to rationalize concepts but are often scarcely refutable and are devoid of experimentation and evidence. This essay aims to bring out the flaws in pseudoscientific claims through the example of the Bermuda Triangle and demonstrate how and why this concept is not scientific. For many years together, the mysterious disappearance of ships, planes and even two nuclear submarines in and over the region popularly called the Bermuda Triangle (or the Devil’s Triangle) has fiddled with human curiosity and compelled our race to make repeated attempts at unravelling this mystery.…

The 17th century marked an Age of Discovery, for both new sea routes and new ways of expressing erotic lust. Poets began to embrace the language of the New World: trade, expansion, possession and sexual desire. Desire became a driving force for exploration of new lands and the human body, resulting in one force overpowering another. Poets including Andrew Marvell used New World language to mask their sexual desires. Marvell’s ‘Bermudas’ takes the idea of faith to a sensual level, using metaphors to uncover a promised Eden and erotic lust.…

The Haunted Tropics: Caribbean Ghost Stories, edited by Martin Munro, is a collection of short stories written by contemporary writers of the Caribbean, as well as others from Canada and the Unites States. The book of fifteen tales explores the main supernatural theme with the evocation of ghosts, dead, undead or dying, that haunt the experiences of the characters in each story. In his introduction Munro wrote "every island of the Caribbean is the site of a deep haunting" (vii). The anthology proves this point as throughout the book there is always the presence of a supernatural element. On the same hand, the collection brought together tales of diverse origins, i.e. from the different Caribbean islands, incorporating together characters who…
