In recent years, the United States of America is no longer known as a “melting pot”, but it is defined as a “salad bowl” which welcomes many people from different countries, cultures and religions to have their own right and seek a better life. The racial diversity not only results in uniqueness in American culture, which is totally different from other countries, but it also causes a lot of complicated problems especially related to racism, in which the skin color is included. The death of Scott- a black man and the fear of black people when driving are two main evidences for the continued existence of racism in America. The case is about DWB which stands for “Driving While Black” relates to racial profiling of American drivers with half African blood. In a study with the total of sixty people including black and as well as white drivers, the black drivers were stopped by the police without breaking any driving rules. Ronald- a black man over forty years old said, “I have been pulled over more than I care to imagine by police officers. I’ve had my car searched for drugs countless times, and I have never once tried or experimented with illegal substances.” (Bell, Hopson, Craig and Robinson). With the reason of existing racism everywhere in the US, Jane Elliott- an elementary teacher in Iowa, created a lesson named “Blue Eyes, Brown Eyes” to educate children about how racism affects our lives. In April 1968, this lesson was created to explain the reason why Martin Luther King was killed. At the beginning, Jane divided her children into two groups based on the color of their eyes (Elliott). The skin color also plays an important role in this research because most of students who have blue eyes are white and black ones have brown eyes. On the first day of the experiment, she gave all the children with blue eyes a lower position than the brown-eyed group by marking them with green armbands (Bloom). Her students were told that all of the black children were very intelligent and clean so they have enough ability to do everything better than the white ones because the color of their hair, skin and eye are caused by a chemical named “Melanin”. The blue-eyed students wrecked every single nice items Jane gave them. A young boy questioned why Jane has blue eyes but she can still be a teacher. The answer was that she would have sat in place of a leader like a principal or a superintendent if her eye color had been brown. The white children got better after that.
