Blue courage Research assignment.
Blue courage, a way of thinking, a way of training and a way of life designed to support not only the integrity of the actions of law enforcement but also to support the purveyors of law enforcement.
I spoke to an Officer a Sargent and my Chief asked them to define Blue Courage for me from their prospective and I learned the following. My Chief referred me to a book, {Unleashing the Power of Unconditional Respect (CRC press)}, required reading in my department. This book I have read twice and will always keep at the ready. The web page found at http://bluecourage.com/ links to videos, articles and available training. I found a particular video very compelling, http://bluecourage.com/video-how-to-make-stress-your-friend. In watching this video I identified with the damage stress can do as I have seen the destruction unmanaged stress has done to my past friends coworkers and family. I have watched friends and coworkers and even a mentor become ill, loose a marriage or become self-destructive in reaction to the stress in their lives. I also could relate the video to some of the most successful and happy people I have known over my years in business. I have also watched some with high levels of courage face their stress and fears and thrive in their lives. In thinking of Blue courage I think of having the strength and wisdom to address these issues before they are damaging, the courage to evaluate and correct. The successful have shown the courage that allows one to be self-critical without being self-deprecating, to learn and correct from our shortcomings. In addition they have the courage to step up for their brothers and sisters, to support them even when it is unwanted or difficult. Blue courage in a nut shell to me is simply the integrity to see what is right, act on it and support it in everything we do. The courage to take the right way not the easy way. I remember back thirty years to my days as a young Marine, a wise Gunny told me, “Courage is doing what’s is hard, what scares you, it’s not the absence of fear, its facing your fear and doing the right thing in spite of it.” This may be a simplistic definition of courage but it is the most accurate I have experienced. Blue Courage on the other hand speaks directly to the courage required to not only perform but also to survive and even thrive in the specialized area of law
