Reflection
When the doctors at my local hospital first told me that I had a rare, genetic disorder called Blue Rubber Bleb Nevus Syndrome, I did not know how to respond. As they told me more about it, I began to understand how the distinguishing blue blebs on my skin had become visible, made of substantially sized veins, arteries, and capillaries. I have been told that I look extremely pale most days. I also experience persistent bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract. Relieving symptoms for myself is an uphill battle. Every three weeks, I am required to get a blood test to evaluate my anemia and iron insufficiency. As for treating and curing this disorder, I have been told that surgery and laser therapy are the most effective ways. Surgery can eliminate quite a few lesions, but there are far too many to remove them all. …show more content…
Being discovered in the year 1958 by William Bean, it affects both males and females equally, as well as all races. It is an extremely rare disorder, with only 150 cases in history. Having this disorder has impacted my feelings on health in general - it has made me even more aware and health conscious of the kind of disorders that exist, and has even made me appreciate how lucky I am to have a good overall health. Before I have my own family, I will continue getting daily check ups with my doctor, as well as regular blood tests. I truly believe that before my children are born, a cure for this disorder will arise and everything will be back to normal again for me and my loved
