In the article “The NFL Concussion Crisis & The Doctor-Patient Relationship” by Andrew M. Blecher readers are informed of the challenges doctors face when trying to properly educated a person who gets a concussion. Blecher supports his claim by giving details on how they deal with patients that get a concussion, especially football players in the NFL. The author’s purpose of this story is to show how a doctor or physician can take all the proper steps to inform someone of the cautions needed, but unless the patient takes the doctor serious nothing will improve. The author’s tone is informative while educating readers the importance of following all proper protocol after a person gets diagnosed with a concussion.…
Young students and student athletes are eager to get back into the classroom or onto the field, but the most important part when dealing with a concussion is to take it easy and rest. Rest is the best way to recover from the short term effects of a concussion. If a person gets back on the field to early, they risk getting second impact syndrome (SIS). SIS happens when a person receives another concussion without the proper time to heal from a previous one. SIS is fatal, and will cause the brain to herniate through the bottom of the skull causing death.…
In the article written by Sam McDowell, After a concussion, its’ unclear when –or if –high school athletes should return to action, McDowell talks about the “next step- the aftermath of the initial diagnosis- that still lacks a precise medical standard.” He includes interviews with recent victims and their families, medical studies, and a possible way forward. McDowell cites recent issues with concussions and informs of recent medical opinions’ and the direction in which to address this problem, even with the lack of medical studies available.…
The Concussion Epidemic of American football Concussions are affecting athletes all around the world. A concussion is “A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging brain cells” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). Brain injuries are no joke and are the major talk in the American sport of football. From peewee to the pro’s concussions is the big talk right now.…
Concussion vs. Football Football is a sport unlike any other; it takes a special breed of humans to play this game at a high level. Unfortunately, at this high level and even in lower levels concussions are a major issue. Lindsey Neumann wrote about concussions in her article “Raising awareness of the severity of concussions.”…

Concussions are known to be one of the most dangerous injuries anyone can have. Especially, when talking about sports, it is known to be the number one health problem that has been on a rise and has prevented players from performing well. This can happen to anyone, from young, current, and former athletes. When dealing with sports, this is an injury that gets looked upon and doesn't get paid too much attention. Many reports have been conducted and they all conclude that sports is the number one severe health problem that continues to rise, doesn't get paid more attention to, and causes concussion.…
Even though still poorly understood, the condition of a concussion was formally identified over a millennium ago (Carroll and Rosner 11). A concussion is caused by a bump, blow, or hit to the head that causes the head and the brain to move rapidly back and forth, consequently bruising the brain. Recently, we found out that we could traumatically our brains with repeated hard hits to the head in sports. The reason we didn’t see the damage that was happening was because concussions are almost invisible. Concussions happen in many sports including football, soccer, rugby, hockey, and even cheerleading.…
According to the Head Case Heath Management System, 3.8 million were reported in 2012, 90% of them have caused loss of consciousness, and an estimated 5.3 Americans still suffer with traumatic brain-injury related disabilities after symptom subside (Sports Concussion Statistics). These statistics all pertain to concussions. Defined by the Mayo Clinic Foundation for Medical Education and Research, a concussions is “a traumatic brain injury that alters the way your brain functions…usually are caused by a blow to the head, they can also occur when the head and upper body are violently shaken” (Concussion). Impacting adults, teenagers, and children alike, concussions are extraordinarily dangerous to the health of an individual that receives one.…
Throughout the years sporting has immersed itself into our Australian culture and perhaps this is the reason why so many people participate in sporting events and competitions. While participating in sports can derive many benefits such as comradery, character-building and overall good health, it is not without its risks. High-velocity and contact sports such as rugby, ice hocking and cycling all involve a high degree of risk for concussions. As the number of athletes participating in these sports grow so do the number of incidents for sport-related concussions. As scientific research in the area of sport-related concussion develops, more information is being shed on the serious short-term and long-term effects of athletes suffering concussions on the field of play.…
Concussions to some may seem like a minor threat easily nullified by the steady words of a coach, however, such artificial accusations can leave players with a long lasting, never ending toll on their body and their mind. It would seem to most that the treatment of concussions would be common place in today's time, but all to any times the player leaves the hospital just to come back the next day. This repetition of injuries leaves only long lasting scars, rather not physical, but mentally as brain damage. However, like most medical preoccupations, a simple cure can be given to the patient of a concussion victim, and in its simplest form the cure would be time. Not only it is proven that extended periods of time can fully heal the effects of a concussion, but also there is the fact that this time allows for the reduction of subsequent concussions.…
Before participating in high school sports, about 53% of high school athletes have already had a concussion, and about 36% college athletes have had multiple concussions in their medical history. High school athletes can receive the most severe and dangerous effects from concussions because their frontal lobes are not fully developed until they are 25 years of age (“Resources”). Parents and teenagers need to know that a concussion is a serious injury and requires one to be checked by the doctor. Many sports today are rushing these athletes back to school and to the sport; however, this leads to more severe injuries and can have dangerous effects on the athlete. Due to the lack of education on concussions, many do not know the symptoms, treatment…
The next hit to my head could possibly kill me or be life damaging. This last one could be life damaging. It has taken a great toll on me. This concussion was a bad one. A Grade 3 concussion is real serious.…
One Reason Traumatic Brain Injuries are so hard to understand, is that they are different every time. A person who takes a blow to the head might remain conscious, and become very disoriented, or they could possibly lose consciousness for a short period of time. A mild concussion may result in confusion for some time after the hit. In worse cases, severe concussions can last for a longer period and can result in amnesia after the person regains consciousness (Concussion 4). Mild concussions require little or no treatment, but symptoms of a head injury might show up later.…
Concussions are a major public health issue, and particularly so in the setting of sports. Millions of athletes of all ages may face the risks of concussion and repeat concussion. A concussion is a clinical syndrome of symptoms and signs occurring after biomechanical force is imparted to the brain. This kind of injury is something you would want to prevent from happening so always do what is suppose to be done. Thesis Statement: Concussions in sports have had a profound effect on athletes, which is why concussions assessment should continue to prevent player safety and should reduce less head-on contact.…
