The Bloods and the crips are easily some of the most violent and famous gangs to ever be created. They were both founded in Los Angeles. These two gangs have been rivals for about their entire history as a gang. The Crips were founded in 1969 by Raymond Washington and Stanley Williams. Not long after that , the Bloods formed from a lot of smaller gangs including the Pirus to become rivals for the Crips. They decided to become a gang because they were very tired of the Crips killing other gang members and them not having enough people to do it. This term paper will document the history of the Bloods and the Crips from the attacks, and the drugs they would distribute.

Some Crip members murdered a member of the pirus which is what began to cause them to realize that the Crips were too big of a group for them to fight by themselves. The straw that broke the camel’s back so to speak, was when some Crip members robbed and killed a man by the name of Robert Ballou Jr. This is what really made all of the smaller gangs realize that they need each other to even compete with the Crips. They had a meeting with each other and decided to band together and become the Bloods. Now that they are bigger and have more sets now the Bloods can really be rivals for the Crips. This was a real turning point in their feud because even though the Crips were still a larger group it is a lot more even now that the Bloods are beginning to grow even in

Jimmy Morgan, I agree that social construct theories would best explain gang affiliation problems by using the social disorganization theory. The social disorganization theory came from research conducted in Chicago by Shaw and McKay (Review of the roots of youth violence, 2016). They discovered that rates of crime were not evenly dispersed across time and apace in Chicago but instead crime tended to be concentrated in particular areas of the city. The location of crime remained stable within different areas of the city despite continual changes in the populations who lived in each area. In neighborhoods with high crime rates, the rates remained high regardless of which racial or ethnic group happened to live there at any particular time…

Published in 1993, “Monster: The Autobiography of an L.A. Gang Member,” is a memoir written by Sanyika Shakur. Set in East Los Angeles during the late 70s, 80’s and early 90s, Shakur’s book illustrates the overwhelming amount of violence that occurs due to conflicts between rivalry gangs. As mentioned in the book, the majority of the conflict is not between the Crips and the Bloods but instead between Crips and other Crips. The book offers a unique difference from most other books about gang life because the author, also known as “Monster Kody” throughout most of the text, is a notorious member of the “Eight Trays Gangster Crips” and manages to work his way through the ranks to Original Gangster. Just graduating the sixth grade, Kody has…

A serious problem that is going on in the United States is criminal street gangs. The Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) defined gangs as “an association of three or more individuals, who members identify themselves by adopting a group identity with a purpose to engage in criminal activity by using force and/or intimidation and such crime are used to enhance or preserve the association’s power, reputation or economic resources” (National Gang Center, National Youth Gang Survey Analysis). The term “gang” is not a new concept as historians have traced this term back to the mid-1700s. However, gang violence has changed and evolved since the first recorded gang activity. Gang…

It is not only social factors or political factors that lead gang violence. Personal factors play an important part in gangs choosing violence and it is the most frequent cause of violence by gang members. Especially when it comes to seek revenge for perceived slights or previous disputes gangs use their utmost power and resources (Buchanan, 2014). A member can be attacked for belonging to a rival gang, living in the same neighborhood of a different gang, or to settle an old score between gang members or their families. Sometimes revenge leads to a series of crimes.…

To be a member you had to 16 years of age, you continue your education and graduate from high school, and you had to be involved in community service. Are civil gang injunctions an effective deterrent? Gangs have been in existence as long as Law has been, dating as far back as the 1500’s, when Shakespeare wrote about "gangs" of sailors. Then in the 1600 's- 1900 's with the Chinese triads, the Italian mafia, and the KKK. . (Gangs before thrasher) the glorification of Jesse James, and Capone kind of set the stage for the gangs of today. Poverty, lack of parental involvement, and the "need" to feel important, combined with the promises of money and popularity it’s easy to see how these young kids choose the gang route, and at an increasingly frightening rate.…

When it comes to Latin American gangs that operate in multiple countries, many people may think of gangs such as the MS-13 or the Latin Kings. However, there is another gang that is just as violent and large as the ones that I have mentioned above, and they are known as the 18th Street Gang, or Barrio 18. As for colors, they wear blue, and as for symbols, they use the number 18, or they occasionally spell the number out using Roman numerals. We see traces of the gang originating as far back as the 1950’s, in Los Angeles, California, but the first official sightings of the gang are seen in the 1980’s in the same location, and gained attention in the Rodney King Riots that occurred in 1992.…
