When subjects were standing blood pressure increased from when they were lying down and sitting. This is because when lying down gravity is eliminated and allows for better venous return, while standing blood goes straight to the feet and has bad venous return.

Results from the individual subject and class average indicated the opposite of this hypothesis. Blood pressure in the subjects increased when comparing supine to standing. This could be due to human error or improper use of the equipment. Not waiting long enough to take the subjects blood pressure when switching positions could have caused this discrepancy. The blood pressure cuff not being tight enough could also have caused this discrepancy. Human error is the main source of error and discrepancy in this experiment because not all participants knew how to properly and accurately take blood …show more content…
Hypertension is a condition present when blood flows through the blood vessels with a force greater than normal. (Beam, Adams, 2014) When a person has high blood pressure the body has to work harder to push blood through the circulatory system. This puts stresses on the body that can be treated with medication or lifestyle modifications. The heart works harder to pump blood from the left ventricle when a person has hypertension because it is working against a greater resistance. This places an increased chronic strain on the cardiovascular system, including the arteries and arterioles. Over time, the arteries become scarred and less elastic due to the stress they are under. (Wilmore, Costill, & Kenney, 2008) Risk factors for hypertension that cannot be controlled are family history, sex, age, and race. Family history is considered a risk factor it plays a much smaller role than many other factors including lifestyle. This factor can be considered most important because often lifestyle is the same within a family. (Wilmore, Costill, & Kenney,
