When looking at Lara’s case, the first thing we did was check her vital signs. Lara’s blood pressure is 115/75, an average blood pressure is 104/57 which makes Lara’s blood pressure a little bit elevated but close to normal. Lara’s pulse is 65 beats per minute and an average pulse is 64 beats per minute, so she has a normal heart beat. Lara’s temperature is 98.5 degrees Fahrenheit and an average is 98.6 Fahrenheit so her temperature is fine. Her height is 5’8” and her weight is 120 lbs., an average for a teenage girl is 5’4” and 114 so Lara is close to average here too; although she is a little bit over, but not enough to make her not normal. When comparing her blood to Mononucleosis, Sickle Cell, and Leukemia, her blood was normal.

    1. The 48 years old Native American women presenting to the Indian Hospital is taking Lisinopril because of hypertension as one of the conditions documented in her past medical history. Hypertension is supported by the current measurements of the blood pressure readings of 165/100. Lisinopril is an angiotensin –converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE) considered as one of the first line treatment option for hypertension. The pharmacological mechanism of action for Lisinopril is to inhibit the action of angiotensin- converting enzyme by preventing conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II which will result in decreased vasoconstriction of the vessels and water reabsorption.…

Our patient had orthostatic hypotension, likely due to fluid and electrolyte imbalance and not autonomic dysfunction due to its acute presentation. Although, autonomic dysfunction related orthostatic hypotension could be due to his diabetes, anemia, small Left Cerebellar Infarct, HTN, or diuretic, betablockers, antihypertensive medications. Fluid and electrolyte imbalance can cause anemia and hyponatremia, and can be caused by adrenal insufficiency, diuretics, beta blockers, antihypertensive medications, diarrhea and fluid restriction/loss. Orthostatic hypotension can also be caused by being supine for extended time, which requires the body to recalibrate autonomic function with position changing. According to MayoClinic.org, orthostatic hypotension can be diagnosed in multiple ways. To begin with, the physician who is diagnosing will begin with monitoring blood pressure. The blood pressure of the patient will be taken when they are resting(sitting), and then when they are standing. If there is a drop of 20 mm Hg in the systolic blood pressure or a decrease of 10 mm Hg in the diastolic blood pressure within two to five minutes of standing up, that is an indicator of orthostatic hypotension (MayoClinic.org). MayoClinic.org also states that another way that a physician could potentially diagnose orthostatic hypotension is by running blood tests to ensure that a patient does not have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), or anemia.…

Wrist and upper-arm blood pressure monitors are mainstays of the blood pressure monitor industry, but some people find them a little bit too bulky or intimidating to be of any use. Finger blood pressure monitors provide a welcome and handy (no pun intended) alternative to these more popular models. A lot of people are suspicious of finger blood pressure monitors and believe them to be unreliable and ineffective when it comes to delivering a reliable reading of one’s blood levels. While it is true that there are a lot of finger blood pressure monitors which fail to provide an accurate measurement of blood pressure, there are many which can hold their own against their upper-arm and wrist counterparts. Of course, finding those finger blood…

Pertussis, has proven itself to be an enigma to sustain protection against this acute respiratory infection in the world of epidemiology and remains endemic to the United States. There has been a vaccine for pertussis in widespread use for over sixty-five years. However, the incidence of pertussis remains high with teens to adults and proves itself deadly to infants under 8 weeks of age when intractable pulmonary hypertension leads to cardiac failure (Carrico, C, 2013). The lowest report in the United States of the disease for one year was 1,010 in 1976. Pertussis, is a highly communicable disease caused by the aerobic gram-negative Bordetella pertussis bacteria which is spread with contact of respiratory droplets released during coughing…

Cardiovascular disease [CVD] is the leading cause of death in the United States [U.S.] (REF), and disproportionally affects Deaf and Hard of Hearing [DHOH] population. It is statistically unknown what percentage of the DHOH in the U.S. population affected by CVD. As it estimate of two million people living in the U.S. are deaf (Pick, 2013) and costly $30 billion in relevant treatment/care (Zazove & Doukas, 1994). Deaf and Hard of Hearing people faced communication barriers. This is due to the inability access to health information, insufficient English proficiency, inability to gain access to health education programs (McKee et al., 2011), and inability to communicate directly with their doctors (Margellos-Anast, Estarziau, & Kaufman, 2006).…

Blood Pressure Blood pressure , as a physiological variable of humans, is a hydrostatic pressure, utilized by blood on the walls of blood vessels.(Tortora and Derrickson 2011). It is caused by the contraction of the ventricles and the amount of blood in the whole cardiovascular system. The mean blood pressure (the average pressure in the cardiac cycle) is coordinated in order to provide adequate blood transfer to the tissues.(Saladin,2001). The decrease of blood pressure is followed by an increase of heart rate. The normal blood pressure is 120 mm HG systolic and 80 mm HG diastolic blood pressure There are three main types of blood pressure regulation considering homeostasis: Neural regulation…
