Bloodstain patterns help in solving the crime because if you know which way the direction of the blood is coming then you can recreate the crime scene and get a better view of what happened at the time the crime was committed. Blood never lies. We can easily find blood stains by using luminol spray. According to Sergeant Mike McCutcheon’s youtube video on Collecting Blood Evidence, luminol and Blue Star, he discuss how you can find blood stains by using the spray. You can also use Blue Star which will cause the blood to glow with the lights off. Once luminol has been used it destroys the blood for further testing. The luminol fades quickly so you have to be quick to take pictures after you are done spraying the premises. Precipitin is used to determine if the blood belongs to an animal or to a human being. For dry blood they use Takayama and Teichmann which is a crystallization test. Kastle-meyer is also used which is a chemical that turns the blood pink if there is any evidence of blood. Use a flashlight to also look for blood stains. Detective Clay Hodson states that you have to assume that blood can be any color and to include in your report that there might be possible blood.
