Blood Doping Should Be Allowed In Professional Sports

Athletes people who are role models to the next generation, people who influence how countries are ran. Many athletes use blood doping to get an extra edge over the other competitors but by many people believe this method is unfair and many people are fighting over whether this method should be banned or allowed in professional sports. Blood doping is the process where blood is transfused or injected in the body to increase red blood cells. This red blood cells are important to athletes because the more red blood cells someone has the more oxygen in their blood which leads to more performance and stronger endurance. This essentially helps an athlete because they can inject more red blood cells in minutes which has been proven to increase the amount of oxygen in their blood by five percent. This may be an easy way to win a medal but this method should be banned in professional sports because of the overall health dangers. …show more content…
If someone uses the method of blood doping they are taking the risk of their blood thickening. The reason that the blood will thicken is because of the extra red blood cells which will consist of more oxygen and proteins in the blood. According to Mario Cazolla, MD, (Editor-in-Chief of Haematologica) the effect of blood thickening will inevitably make the blood harder to circulate throughout the body. Medical issues will then arise which could lead to a higher risk of heart diseases and possible strokes. Mario Cazolla, stated that, “since blood doping exposes athletes to several medical risks, we must be against blood doping… Sports are intended to improve people’s health, doping worsens it” (as cited in Akhavan, 2008).
