Throughout history, the human race has faced a countless number of obstacles in which they have overcome. Humans have established themselves as a stand out, innovative species able to defy nature. They have gone past the boundaries of air and space and have gone further than any other being. Despite the fact that it seems as if humans are invincible, rising above every obstacle, in current society, they face a disastrous problem which even they may not be able to surmount. This problem is the destruction of the environment and the subsequent repercussions of global warming. He has dedicated over twenty five years researching slavery. He has traveled throughout the world to analyze the environmental effects of slavery. After his years of work, he has found indisputable evidence connecting slavery with environmental destruction and global warming and compiled it in his book, Blood and Earth: Modern Slavery, Ecocide, and the Secret to Saving the World. Bales writes of his encounters with slavery, documenting his observations of the slave labor in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Bangladesh, Ghana, and Brazil. In his novel, Bales proves that whether or not slavery exists in the mining industries of the Congo and Ghana, the fishing markets of Bangladesh, or the lumber production in Brazil, it all has a negative influence upon the environment. In each of the locations he traveled to, he found that the environment was being destroyed through unethical production practices.
