Those in opposition of block scheduling argue that specific classes need to held continuously throughout the year in order to reinforce the curriculum. Classes such as mathematics and college level classes are rigorous courses that require extensive focus and practice. As Mark Stern a math professor at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina explains,"It takes more focus to follow something like a math class… It's easier to get people to sit around and talk about Shakespeare for 90 minutes than to teach them how to understand quadratic equations"' ("Block Scheduling in Schools").
