Music plays a vital role in people’s lives every day, including the millions of teenagers who are in high school. Since music incites such a wide range of opinions, questions about allowing it in schools arises. County school boards all around the U.S. are using firewalls and other technology to block students from accessing music streaming websites while using the school’s Wi-Fi network. The controversial issue of allowing music in schools is beginning to take root, and in short, schools should stand strong about their stance in the matter of blocking music sites.

When considering how music affects mood, research all around the world concludes music has an emotional impact on a person’s disposition. In many of these researches, the type of music played determined if the person’s mood changed in a positive manner or a negative manner (Music and Mood 1,2). Theoretically, allowing a student to choose the type of music he or she listens to, while at school, has the potential to alter his or her mood in a negative way. Despite possibly improving a student’s demeanor, the decision of permitting a student to choose his or her own music is too unpredictable to be logical for an environment such as a school. If the overall goal is to improve the mood of students, playing music throughout the classroom might be considered a solution. In reality, each student reacts to music in a different way and it is virtually impossible to find a piece of music every student enjoys but also improves mood (Brewer
