My under graduation-
When I started my career as a Marine Engineer after my under graduation, I had no idea what I was to expect. I trained all through my under grad to work on board a ship; I heard stories about life at sea from professors and seniors who returned from sailing. I read books both from the course curriculum and out of my own interest to prepare myself for a career in the open seas. I graduated as one of the top students from my batch. But one thing I was not prepared for was to make decisions under pressure.

The only command we four engineers and the rest of the engine crew received from the Chief Engineer was to bring the situation under control. We were not given extensive details about the situation and we were definitely not commanded by our immediate officers to follow a specific plan. We entered the engine room, based on our instincts and experience; identified the problem and worked to fix the broken steam line. There was no hierarchy involved when we were working as a team; each took lead on a specific issue and someone else followed. This was

I exposed myself to new ideas and obstacles when I became an ocean lifeguard. Surprisingly, the hardest part about being a lifeguard is communicating with people from different cultures and backgrounds. For example, one beach has a large population of Spanish speaking immigrants. To communicate with them was a hefty setback for someone like myself who does not come from a Spanish speaking background. To adapt, I asked as many Spanish speakers as possible, how to say certain phrases until I was able to communicate with basic sentences to get my point across.…

I have a strong desire to become an officer in the United States Navy. To achieve this goal I wish to be accepted into Officer Candidate School where I will later graduate with a commission as an Ensign. I believe myself to be of both strong mind and body, and I accredit this to my commitment to my school, my work, and my training. I graduated top ten percent of my class in High School and Magna Cum Laude in college and I continually try to increase the diversity of my knowledge so to become a better rounded person. I majored in Criminology and Criminal Justice and minored in Psychology, so through convention teaching methods I have gained a firm grip in the Social Sciences; however, its through my work experience that I have really grown.…

Being a solider in the Athenian Navy is not easy. My fellow soldiers and I get up at the crack of dawn each day to practice our sword fighting and archery lessons. If we made one tiny mistake we were forced to do thirty laps around the camp or until we dropped from exhaustion. Thank the gods that only happened once, the ironic thing about that is that it was me who made the careless mistake and made everyone very angry. The sergeant of my battalion was very surprised at the progress that I have made during my training period and has even offered to privately train me himself.…

A dilemma that I faced, and still am facing is simply the decision about what I want to do with my life after my high school career. In my freshman year of high school my goal was simply to get through the year in one piece. I was forced to conform to my new environment and all the strict rules that came along with it. Along with that it was the sudden transition from being the "big dogs" as eighth graders at my middle school to being "fresh-meat" in my first year high school. With so much attention placed on me as a freshman like on the varsity basketball team, where I was constantly forced to prove my worth to the coach and the players, to stepping out of my comfort zone and performing in a mandatory play for the rest of the the school as…

Seek responsibility and take responsibility for your actions, what that means is that when you do something, make a decision, whatever it may be, take responsibility for them. Being a leader of any kind, at any level means someone either looks up to you, or they simply look to you for guidance. When you have people under you, or that you are in charge of, you have to be on top of things, know how to handle any situation, and if you do not know how to handle a situation, then know where you can find information on how to handle the situation. Marines past, present, and future all have had to and will have to take responsibilities for their actions. In some way, shape, or form we cannot just try and weasel our way out of a situation.…

In these situations, calm strength combined with compassion is the most effective strategy. Likewise, public events at WCVE and my after-school/weekend jobs have often presented me with equally unanticipated circumstances, such as having only myself to rely on, completing unfamiliar tasks with time constraints, or needing to adopt innovative angles in communicating with someone. On occasions when a solution is not immediately possible, I assure whomever I am working with that I will keep striving, and then unearth a way to solve the problem…

I arranged a group of 4 staff, briefed and directed them on the health and safety issue with the fridge and water on the shop floor and the possible consequences it could have to the store and customers. I made the decision to empty the fridge. The main concern is that the water is cleaned and the stock moved out of the broken fridge before it drops below 3 degrees and is too cool to sell to customers, the advantage being that this stock can then be returned once the fridge has been fixed by the engineer and it does no cause too much disturbance to customers. Joe ask if she would like her to call the engineer, as a supervisor I know she is capable of calling the service desk, give them all the details and request an engineer to come and fix the fridge. Rich, to mop up the water and put down wet mats to prevent further hazard of the water.…
