In Gladwell’s first section, ‘The Love Lab’, the psychologist John Gottman gives his analysis of the data he has received while examining married couples and their interactions. He can predict the future the couple has on staying together, with a 90% success rate. All Gottman has to do, is watch a 15 minute conversation between the couple. Then, with some equations and close observations, he can decode every emotion and expression, most of which the participant does unknowingly and subconsciously. Gottman has learned to “read every emotional nuance in people’s facial expressions and how to interpret seemingly ambiguous bits of dialogue” (21). Gottman has gotten so efficient that he can even decode an unknowing couple, in a public place, in just a few minutes.
