According to The Washington Post, as of 2017, there have been 523 African Americans killed as a result of police brutality. (The Washington Post 1) Despite the number of police killings increasing over the years, there have been fewer to non-convictions on the officer behalf. According to HuffPost, in 2013, there were thirteen convictions, but in 2015 there were zero. (Matt Ferner 1) Being a black man in the United States, there is a high chance that I could be stopped by an unjust police officer and become another victim of police brutality with my name plastered on the news for a short while with no justice to follow. Thankfully, this has not happened to me as of yet, but what about the other men that it is currently happening to. Going through the Race in America Course, you are forced to open your eyes to the situations that are prevalent in the country that we live in because it affects us all in ways that we do not understand or notice. For me, I use to not care about the blacks who were gunned down around me, because I felt protected in my own little bubble that has been created around. But I soon learned that that bubble was a figment of my imagination, and that my skin color was going to eventually show me that truth. Thankfully, I was able to experience this truth in a nonviolent setting, but an educational one.
